What are TD Customers buying?

A Mixture Of Core And Specialist Funds

Despite a challenging quarter for markets, fund purchases from our Recommended Funds list by TD customers were double the amount of those sold. It is good to see our customers understand the need to continue with long-term investment despite the short-term volatility, particularly when industry wide figures show large numbers of retail investors withdraw investments in February. TD customer assets went into a range of funds including core equity and specialist funds.

Our most popular investments should not be taken as a personal recommendation to buy or sell a particular fund or stock. Instead it is simply an indication of the general buying and selling trends of our customers observed in the period stated.

Most bought funds

The most popular fund by assets was HSBC American Index. The fund, which was up 3.3% over the quarter, tracks the S&P 500 index. US large-cap benchmarks are notoriously difficult for active fund managers to beat, so it makes a lot of sense gaining access via such a passive fund. This also reflects a wider move by investors favouring index funds over their active counterparts during periods of extreme market volatility.

The second most bought fund was also the top performer over the quarter, BlackRock Gold & General, which returned 42.8% over the first three months of this year. The fund has benefited from the rise in the gold price as investors sought some security from market volatility.

Interest in absolute return funds remains as a means of protecting against this volatility, with Henderson UK Absolute Return and H2O MultiReturns in the top 8 in terms of inflows. The latter had a difficult quarter, but as we have highlighted due to the way it is managed it is always likely to experience some short-term peaks and troughs in terms of performance. In the long term it remains a good prospect for delivering positive returns.

Specialist sector vehicles such as Henderson Global Technology also remain among the most popular funds, as well as property fund BlackRock Global Property Securities Equity Tracker. The technology sector in particular is providing some exciting disruptive growth opportunities.

Core funds in the shape of Fidelity Moneybuilder Income and JP Morgan US Equity Income continue to form an important part of TD customers' portfolios. Liontrust UK Smaller Companies also features among the most bought funds as customers look to diversify their investments across the market cap range.

Most traded Stocks

These two tables reveal the top ten stocks bought by TD customers and the top ten stocks sold by TD customers in the first quarter of 2016 by volume.

It's no surprise to see commodity and resource stocks dominating both top ten lists with volatile oil and energy prices seen through the period. For those with an eye on financial stocks it’s interesting to see three banks feature – although Lloyds, Barclays and HSBC are popular choices with TD customers generally.

Tesco is perhaps the headline stock in the sells list, possibly reflecting customer apathy towards the brand, despite a generally positive performance since January. They also reported a return to profit in their preliminary results.
