What are TD customers buying?

TD customers maintain a long-term investment strategy

In a quarter which saw a good deal of market volatility, fund purchases from our Recommended Funds list by TD customers were more than double the amount of those sold. This reflects how knowledgeable our customers are, and that they understand the need to continue to focus on a long-term investment strategy. Those assets went into funds across a broad range of asset classes.

Although we did notice the amount of TD customers invested in funds with exposure to gold increase by 14% over the last quarter. This means that since the start of the year, the amount of our customers with funds exposed to gold increased by 30%.

Our most popular investments should not be taken as a personal recommendation to buy or sell a particular fund or stock. Instead it is simply an indication of the general buying and selling trends of our customers observed in the period stated.

Most bought funds

The most popular fund by assets over the second quarter was BlackRock Gold & General. The fund returned 43.1% over the period as investors seeking a "safe haven" from market volatility benefited from a rise in the gold price.

The second most bought fund was HSBC American Index. The fund, which was the most popular in the previous quarter, is a passive vehicle which tracks the S&P 500 index. It reflects the increasing move in the US, where the large-cap benchmark has proved difficult for active managers to outperform. Periods of extreme market volatility have also encouraged investors to favour index funds.

The quest for income is a key theme for investors, and this is reflected in the popularity of Fidelity MoneyBuilder Income, Artemis Global Income, Axa Global High Income and First State Global Listed Infrastructure, all of which seek to provide a good level of yield.

The technology sector in particular is providing some exciting disruptive growth opportunities. Specialist sector vehicles such as Henderson Global Technology also remain among the most popular funds, as well as property fund BlackRock Global Property Securities Equity Tracker, which has the attraction of global diversification.

In addition customers are diversifying their investments across the market capitalisation range in the shape of funds such as Schroder US Mid Cap, MFM Slater Growth and Liontrust UK Smaller Companies.

These two tables reveal the top ten stocks bought by TD customers and the top ten stocks sold by TD customers in the second quarter of 2016 by volume.

Banking stocks and housebuilders have been heavily affected since the UK voted for a Brexit so it is no surprise to see Taylor Wimpey joining perennial 'top tenners' Lloyds, Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland on the list. Retailers have been hogging headlines too and they are represented through Tesco and Marks & Spencer.

From a top sells perspective, we’re seeing a lot of the big commodities players in here this quarter. Whereas Glencore Plc, Anglo American and Premier Oil are popular buys, BP, Tullow Oil and Royal Dutch Shell are not!
