What are TD customers buying?

TD Customers continue to choose from our Recommended Funds list

In a strong quarter for market and fund performance fund buys from our Recommended Funds list by our customers were more than double the value of fund sells. We have said before that our customers are knowledgeable in terms of their need to focus on a long-term investment strategy and these figures bear this out. As in the previous quarter, these assets went into funds across a diverse range of asset classes.

Our most popular investments should not be taken as a personal recommendation to buy or sell a particular fund or stock. Instead it is simply an indication of the general buying and selling trends of our customers observed in the period stated.

Most bought funds

As in the previous quarter the most popular fund by assets was BlackRock Gold & General. While the price of gold has moderated recently investors still see gold, and hence the fund, as a safe haven in times of market uncertainty.

Also for the second quarter in a row the second most bought fund was HSBC American Index. The fund tracks the S&P 500 index. Its popularity reflects the increasing move from active to passive investment strategies in the US, where the large-cap benchmark has proved difficult for active managers to outperform. Periods of extreme market volatility have also encouraged investors to favour index funds.

One of our major themes, income, can be seen in the number of purchases of funds such as Fidelity MoneyBuilder Income, Artemis Global Income, JP Morgan US Equity Income and even First State Global Listed Infrastructure, which offers a good level of yield.

Our investment theme of disruptive growth also comes to the fore via the popularity of Henderson Global Technology, which was also one of the top performing funds over the quarter.

Other funds which saw significant asset inflows were Schroder US Mid Cap and Fidelity Strategic Bond.

Remember each fund is unique and exposed to different levels of risk. Some are relatively low risk, whilst others can be very risky and those will only be appropriate for more sophisticated investors.

Most traded stocks

Some familiar names appear in the top 10 most traded stocks over the quarter, such as Lloyds Banking Group, Glencore and Taylor Wimpey. Interesting names which have appeared in the top 10 this quarter are Sirius Minerals, a fertiliser development company, and Sound Energy, a European oil & gas exploration and production company. Centamin, a gold miner, is also on our most traded list but is a name some may be less familiar with.

Many of the most bought stocks are also among the top 10 most sold, often due to customers taking profits on their gains. BP and Royal Dutch Shell’s appearance in the list, however, probably reflects the recent weakness in the oil price, although Tullow oil appears in both lists.

Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) including ETFs, ETCs and ETNs track a wide variety of underlying investments, some of which may be complex in nature and involve leverage, shorting or a high degree of volatility. It is therefore important that you read the Prospectus or Fact Sheet (available on the issuers’ websites) prior to investing and ensure that you understand how it is structured and the associated risks.
